What does it mean to run your own server?
A server needs three things: a physical location, the software, and on-going support and maintenance.

Physical Location: To run a server, you need to have a secure spot for the physical location of the server. Because this is a closed loop server and not one that talks to the Visa/MasterCard networks, you do not need the PCI audits, but it would be a good idea to make your location match those specifications. Then, purchase and install a server and connect it to the network.

Software: The software to run a server consists of the operating system, the database software, the web serving platform, and the actual gift card server software. The gift card server software is customized from the base software. That customization puts in the graphics you want, changes the layout to something you want to have, and adds any unique reporting and functions you need. By building on "open source" software for the database and web serving platform, the licencing costs are quite low.

Ongoing Support: Any server needs a certain amount of support. No matter how little you think you need, there is always something that has to be done. (Sometimes, that is only someone to go and reboot the machine when something has happened.) Typically, what happens is that after using the system, people want to have things changed a little. A new report is requested. Fields on a screen need to be changed so that you can better manage the merchants. No matter how good things are before you put this into a merchant's hands, there will be changes.
